Motor Oil Viscosity Ratings Explained

Motor oil viscosity is probably a term that you've heard during an oil change. Motor oil viscosity ratings are the numbers and letters on bottles of motor oil, but what do the numbers mean? At Toyota of Brookhaven, we want you to be informed about your vehicle, which is why we have explained motor oil viscosity ratings below.

The viscosity rating determines how the motor oil resists flow. The number that comes before the W is the viscosity at low temperatures, and low viscosity oil works well in cold temperatures. The higher the number means the higher the viscosity, which works better in hot temperatures. For instance, a motor oil with a viscosity reading of 10W-30 means that the rating is at 10 when the engine temperature is cold and 30 when it is hot.
